Lacoste store: the history of the creation of the company
In 1926 the famous French tennis player René Lacoste played for the US tennis open-championship wearing handсrafted white polo. While classic tennis clothes of the time were simple urban shirts with long sleeves, Lacoste polo with short sleeves was made of lightweight knitted fabric, which was comfortable for playing in the intense heat and in that way was much different from traditional clothing.
In 1927, in the Davis Cup, the largest international team competition in men’s tennis, the American press gave Rene Lacoste the nickname “alligator”. This has resulted from the dispute between Lacoste and the captain of the French tennis team, who promised to give Lacoste a crocodile leather suitcase if Lacoste won the competition. He did not win the competition, but the nickname “alligator” stuck with René Lacoste, including his homeland France, where they knew firsthand the persistence of the tennis player nature, who behaved bravely and furiously on the court, not forgiving the mistakes of his challengers. Later on, a friend of Lacoste, artist Robert Georges, came up with an idea to make the alligator as the trademark of a tennis player’s game wardrobe. According to his sketch, Lacoste polo was decorated with embroidered crocodile, the image of which later became the emblem of the Lacoste brand.
In 1933, after leaving the elite sport, René Lacoste founded La Societe Chemise Lacoste with André Gillier, the owner of the largest French knitting company of that time. Originally, the brand specialized in the production of tennis and golf shirts, as well as yachting shirts, but in 1951 it was agreed to forego the traditional white shirts and present the world a new collection of colorful shirts. The collection became so successful that a year later the company began exporting its products to the USA under the motto “Lacoste – a status symbol of a competent player”.
In 1963 the company was managed by Bernard Lacoste, the son of René Lacoste. Under his leadership, the Lacoste brand reached an annual turnover of 300000 clothes. And already in 1968, in collaboration with Jean Patou perfume company the first Lacoste men’s perfumes were released. Also in the 70s, on top of classic shirts, the brand started to produce tees, optical and sunglasses, tennis boots, as well as watches, various leather products, and casual shoes, and not just Lacoste athletic sneakers.
